700 mile road trip, unloaded, & 100% hyw (I-40) here is the truth!!
2001 2500HD cc sb 4x4 w/15,000 miles, bone stock, w/ AMSOIL air filter. 70 to 75 mph / 2000 to 2200 rpm's..
2 fillups
1st ave. mpg 18.4
2nd ave. mpg 20.1
Total average mpg 19.25 ;)

According to my onboard I have averaged 19.7 over 1178 miles with an average speed of 34mph. I have not corrected for the larger tires that have been on since 700 miles.

Last roadtrip unloaded: Albuquerque, NM to Corvallis, OR and back. Stock with AMSOIL air filter and AMSOIL dual remote bypass oil filter. Trip included site seeing through Arches, Canyonlands, and Mesa Verde National Parks. Crossed Soldier Summit on US-6, a 7440 ft pass, 4 times (had to pick up the in-laws in Salt Lake City before touring the parks).
4434 miles using 217.365 gallons equates to 20.39887 MPG.
Overall milage:
Road trips: 7566 miles at 20.015 MPG
Towing 7K 26ft TT: 4731 miles at 11.875 MPG
Local: 6436 miles at 17.398 MPG

Moral of Gas Mileage=Light foot ........I'm going to have to let some one ELSE drive my truck to get fuel eco......Look at Jim's (Jebar) #'s on his trip back to NC,impressive in the CC Dually.....

I have a question for you guys with the '03's and the onboard mileage computer. Have you looked at your instantaneous mpg for different speeds? Specifically, I was wondering (on a flat road) what the mpg difference is at say, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 mph. What I'm getting at is where is the sweet spot for mileage?

Farm truck. Running around the farm, running from farm to farm, running to town for parts = 13.5 mpg. Went to the big city yesterday (Lubbock) to get an alinement and pick up some gauges for a Dodge buddy of mine from DIS. 60 miles there 70 miles of city driving 60 miles back = 16.7 mpg. When driving down the road I drive 70 to 72 mph which is about 65 to 67 on the speedo. When I figure mpg I add 7.2% for the 285 tires.

The truth,
Averaging about 18.5
Running pretty hard 18, lookin out for 5-0 getting pretty close to 20, but not over 20 yet.
As you can see my average favors the "running pretty hard" side.
Towing, only one good tow so far, about 16.5 for 5k TT.
Iv'e taken 2 good trips in the last month. The first was a 400 km trip each way on the 401 towing 9500 lbs (total trailer & load) at 65 to 70 mph and I got 16.4 mpg (imperial gal). The second was a 2.5 hour trip each way, without the trailer, on two lane roads at 55 to 60 mph. I got 24.0 mpg on that one.
The towing milage really impressed me so I'm very happy with this truck. :D :D :D

Avg 16.5-17 overall milage. This includes city driving, stop and go traffic, and highway. I see all in one day of driving. The best I have got is 18.5 in this same type driving.

I have tried it in a 02 Denali
60 16.5
65 16.2
70 15.4
75 15.1
80 14.7
This was with almost no wind on fairly level road. I reset the computer to average about 3 miles @ each speed.
Although not with a computer, My 6.2 also loses about 2 Mpg from holding 60-65 to holding 75-80. Drops from 21-22 to 18.5-19.5

The truth....
Just returned from a delivery outside Bradenton, Florida. Left my Florida house and returned to my Pennsylvania house.
16 hours 30 minutes .... 1039 miles....average 63mph for the day (6AM to 10:30 PM). Fuel mileage was 18.2mpg unloaded.
How fast do I run when I'm running? Ha, Ha....Ha Ha.
I'm hauling to Minnesota right now. Back to Pennsylvania to pick up and then Arkansas, back.. Idaho, back... Michigan, back and Tampa are all scheduled by the end of October. The truth will be known.

Empty:
Best = 19.5mpg (commuting to work in Bay Area)
Worst = 15.5mpg (when it was brand new)
Common = 17 to 17.5mpg
Towing an open trailer w/car (~5000lbs):
Best = 16mpg (60 to 70mph hwy)
Worst = 14mpg (around town)
Common = 15.5mpg
Towing a 24' enclosed trailer w/car (~10000lbs):
Best = 12mpg (60 to 70mph)
Worst = 9.2mpg (80 to 90mph) :eek:
Common = 10.5 to 11mpg
I have over 28k miles on it now, and when I put the Banks exhaust on (about 12k miles ago), I pretty much gained an extra 1mpg in most situations. smile.gif
If I cruised nice and easy empty at 55 to 65mph, I have no doubt I could get over 20mpg, but who wants to drive that slow?? :D
Also in the Bay Area, but a Crew Cab.
Unloaded:
Best - 17mpg
Worst - 12mpg
Towing 22ft V-nose enclosed trailer with car:
Best - 14mpg
Worst - 8.6mpg (heavy headwind)
I'm a little disappointed, but it's still way better than the gassers get.

Just did a small trip from Reno to Vallejo and back. Mileage was 21.1 traveling no faster than the posted speed most of the time. Wife and kids with me. More than pleased with this kind of mileage with all the room and power available. smile.gif
Best - 21.03 - hiway no load (no a/c & stock)
Worst - 18.5 - hiway no load (summer w/ac on)
Loaded - 12.5 6500# (250 mile trip)

I'm too happy with my truck to even worry about milage. I just put fuel in her and I go. With, fo course all the TLC maintance I can do myself and hope she never see's the inside of a service bay at a stealership.

11,4m/gal empty trailer
I know it's low,but we haul hard!The milage master logged a low of 6.3m/gal running from Richmond ,Virginia to Birmingham ,Alabama last summer in the 01.Best of 10.9m/gal was Corpus Christy,Texas to Shreveport Louisianna 2weeks ago in the 02.

Whats the normal trailer weight loaded? Do you use goose neck or fifth wheel? Length of trailers?
Number and capacity of axles?
Trailers = Ullhaul mfg
Length = 53'
Flip out ramps at the top.
3/ 8000lbs Dexter torsion flex axels.
Trailer Gvw is 24,ooolbs.
Easy rider air ride goosneck/AR g-60 modified.
Prodigy brake controllers.
Shop made Rear end coolers.
Drive line service shaft safety loop.
Valentine equipped.
D/A's are registered at 25999lbs Gcvw
PSD's are registered at 30000lbs Gcvw
We are legal 99.9% of the time.
NO HOBBY TRUCKS IN THIS OLE GARAGE !
And yes the fridge is always stocked with BUDS!

Have you ever considered running 255/85's on your trucks?
Logging the highway miles like you do, you can burn up those miles at a lower rpm(10% lower), thus a correlating savings in fuel consumption.

We could get a little better fuel milage running 4x2s.
We run 4x4s because we spend alot a time on your side of the border.Try pulling a 53'trailer in a Canadian Blizzard with 2wd.
We haul between ONT and NS alot.
As a fellow canadian you can understand winter safety.

Mine seems in line with strange engine, right around 17 empty and a worst of 8.6 at 26k loaded into a headwind. Pulls great but if you load it down, well, it costs to pull a load. The 8.6 is with the juice on level 3 at 75 mph. The 17 empty is with the juice on level 2. It still beats the ctd getting 10 and having to get out and push to get up the hills. :D :D

I have an 02 2500HD D/A with cab height camper shell. 13,000 miles towing a 32ft "Toy Hauler" trailer with high profile, approx weight 8,000lbs. Have kept records of all fuel consumed. Average towing MPG is just over 9. Milage not as good as I expected but I LOVE the truck!

with 37850 on it.....average is 17.9 the best was 21.9 and the lowest towing was 8.5 hauling GCVW was 22,500 and averaged aroung 9.5 - 10 mpg's

Hey Mackin, I have a 2002 Dually crew cab D/A 4x4 and the best I can do around town is 14 mpg. Of course it's a lot of cold starts and going 11 miles to work and then shutting it down. How many miles are you driving a day? A buddy of mine who I work with, has an identical truck, but with the 6 speed and he gets 18 mpg! If I had to do it over again, I'd go with the 6 speed and then I would have avoided the Allison issues!

Took del. of 1st Duramax in SF bay area on 2/27/01. and have been keeping track of fuel
mileage since day 1. 1st tank averaged 17.96. After a few trips before purchasing a 2001 Prowler 5 wheel trailer (GVW 13,700#) the best I could get was 17.38. The last time I weighed the combination (20440#)in August of this year includig Generator for dry camping. After only 11439 miles I have consumed 1056.789 Gallons of fuel for an overall ave. of 10.824 MPG. Have "stealership" do all my servicing as I know nextWorst trip to nothing about diesels and would prefer to have no problems with the warrantee. (Worst trip mileage pulling trailer with a strong headwind was 8.18 MPG.)
I just completed a 2900 mile loop trip visiting Nevada and Utah National Parks and North Rim of the Grand Canyon towing my 26 foot 5th wheel. About 40 mountain passes between 6K and 9K foot elevation (highest we went was 10K). I got about 11.5 MPG for the trip. 11.85 best and 10.63 for the worst mileage on a given tank full. Most snow encountered, 10 inches at Ely NV. Sure surprised us, as well as the locals. We had to lay over for a day as we did not have chains with us. Sure was fun getting the snow off my slide-out. Only problem with the Duramax was that twice the fuel system lost prime after being parked overnight a temperatures below 32F. At first crank it would start and run about 2 seconds and quit. It took a few pumps on the filter priming pump to get it going both times. DeiselPage comes thru again!!!

Well, for my '01 Dodge Cummins 6-speed, which is a 4x2 shortbed:
Worst Ever: 15.5 towing '55 Chevy on flatbed
Average over 70k miles: 19.3
Best ever: 25.0 cruising 65-70
Typical Highway, running 70: 22-23
Typical Highway, running 75-80: 20-21
Typical in town: 17-18.5
The 2wd helps considerably since comparable 4x4 trucks get about 1.5 to 2mpg lower than what I've seen. I am very pleased with the cumulative average considering a high percentage of my mileage is in town.
I noticed a gradual increase up to about 50,000 miles (have 76,000 now). The cumulative average between 40k-60k was 19.7mpg.
I have only had two or three tanks net less than 20mpg on the highway in the last 60,000 miles.
I do make an effort to get decent mileage, if I drove like an average Joe Blow I don't think it would be as good.

Most of the time I carry a large camper on my
3500 4x4 Ext Cab. My average milage is 13 mpg
with the camper. We have got as high as 14 mpg.
Last week we took the camper off and around town
some highway with mountains averaged 16.6 mpg on
last fueling during which time I did not carry
the camper.
I'd love to see what I get running unloaded on
a flat highway?? I'll bet it would be 18 mgp???
Big dually 4x4 trucks can't compete with our
2500 2x4 brothers when comparing mgp

I notice no one has commented about my post of 10/11/02 either negatively or positively. Is this a bad sign?
The whole truth...
First 20K miles I was disappointed with struggling to get 18 mpg highway driving empty. Around 26K miles I started getting better economy with 19.5 to my best of 19.9 highway. Hauling is another matter and can't really be compared. My driving is in the 2200 rpm or 74 mph range most times.
I don't know how alot of you guys & gals get all these high MPG's .I'm lucky to get 16 MPH
My mileage was steady at 17.8 18.5 MPG while running 65. I added a soft tonneau cover in late aug. and mileage has been 20-21.5 hwy @ 63-65 total miles around 25k. Over 65 (70) and mileage drops to 18 or so. Around town I get 14.5 to 16.
In service days: 335
KM used to calculate: 33941
Actual KM on truck: 41891
Figures in l/100km, mi/imp. gal, mi/us gal
Worst: 18.4/15.4/12.8
Best: 11.2/25.3/21.0
Overall average: 14.7/19.3/16.0
These figures have been corrected for my tire size (265/75's). Most of the hours driving the truck has been (unfortunately) commuting, and not cruising on the highway. The truck doesn't tow very often either.

Without a load in the low to high 19 teens with a few 20 to 21.5 throwed in and driving no different.Starting to cool off around here and still in the low 19 range.Pulling the 11 foot high fiver drops to 11.5 at freeway speeds.Got 13,000 miles on it now but the mileage has been in this range since about 5,000 miles.Started in the 17 teens and just got better.Noticed the temp gauge is running a notch down even after an extended run since the weather has cooled down,makes me wonder if these trucks could use a little more air going through the engine compartment in the warmer months.
