Hi guys,
I'm posting this for a friend.One of you GM brains out there will have a few ideas I'm sure.
Anyway,here is the scoop!
2001 Chevrolet Silverado 3500
Engine: 6.6 L / 403 CID / 8 cyl / Diesel / Turbo / OHV
Fuel: Fuel Injection / direct fuel injection
Ignition: No Ignition (Diesel)
Trans: 5-speed Automatic Transmission (Electronic)
Mileage: 72,197 miles
Emissions: OBD-II Compliant
VIN: 1GCHK23191F139300
Misc Data: 4 door crewcab
Symptoms: black smoke
Occurs: On Accel

Dear members, This 2001 duramax will put out
excessive black smoke. The way it does this is this way.
Cruising along at any speed above 45 and release the
accelerator,not all the way, but such as coming up behind
another vehicle and then depressing the throttle to pick up
some speed and you get a large puff of soot black smoke for
about 2-3 seconds. The more times you do this the longer
the duration of smoke. The customer pulls a 21 foot boat
and when he does this problem is even worse and longer in
duration. I have seen the soot on the boat.(lots) If you
release the throttle all the way and depress it again it
doesn't smoke at all. The balance rate on the injectors is
0 to -1 on all 8 injectors.The compression is 380-390 on
all cylinders.The aftercooler has been pressure checked and
passed.The desired and actual fuel pressures are within
specs. The turbo wastegate operation has been checked and
it is getting boost. I ramped up the rail pressure all the
way for 3 min. shut off the engine, removed the glow plugs,
and ign. relay no.1. Cranked the engine over with an
assistant on each side of engine to look for fuel spray out
of any cylinder, there was none. New air filter,fuel
filter,fuel API is 36. I think the problem is with 1 or
more injectors or injection control. With the durability of
this engine I don't get to see many with problems but this
one has one and I am asking for some help. Thank you
