Duckhntr - I used to be a big K&N fan, and had them on ALL my vehicles. Then I found out that every oil sampling lab in the country can tell you that you're running an oiled-gauze filter: you have silicon (sand) in your oil, because they do such a poor job of air filtration. So you'll experience higher engine wear rates than sticking with a paper filter. So when I hear "K&N", I cringe.

The superior alternative is a two-stage dual-density oiled foam filter that uses a "high tack" oil (it's very sticky, not like common oil, so it holds the particles better and the oil doesn't migrate down the air intake and affect your MAF). And for some reason those filter tend to be lower cost than the K&N. Kennedy Diesel offers a good one, and Amsoil also has a good one. There may be others as well, but I'm confident enough in the quality of both those products to suggest them.

You should reveal your vested interest in selling the Amsoil product. As is, your "testimonials" are highly suspect. More Power provided you with the link in this thread (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=003637) explaining the rules.

It's funny, K&N has test data that shows just the opposite. Vendors always have data that show their product is better.

Here are two images of the inlet elbow for my 6.5:

Total mileage on this elbow, without any cleaning whatsoever, is 224,094. Of that, over 154,000 have been with a K&N filter. This engine was worked hard in some very unforgiving, dirty environments as well as on the highway. Where's all that dirt that they're supposed to let through? Unfortunately, I had the opportunity to tear my engine down in January due to a broken piston and cracked main webs. The intake tract shows no evidence of poor filtration. In fact, nothing in the hardware yields any such evidence.

At 22,000 miles I replaced the original stock air filter with the KN.Could tell no difference between the two as far as fuel mileage and power.Did do an oil analyis running the KN which came back excellant,even a comment stateing to keep up the good work.No silicone alarms.There is a gasket that is used with the KN, wonder if some are not using it.Also found no fine dust or sand in intake tube after 15,000 miles of use.Went back to stock paper filter because of warranty issues and no benefits to be had with the KN.
