IS there any benefit?drawback from removing the cat from a 95 6.5 TD?

Evidently the Cat is basiaclly a Soot Trap. When clogged, you go blow it out..( paraphrasing the service manual )
Serves no useful purpose in real life. However, is you have emissions inspections, sometimes they do a 'visual' to see the the cat is hangin' there. If So, second best is to Gut the Cat ( versus skin it).
Planning on doing that to mine, as eventually i might be in AZ, and not srue how anal they are on the Cat, versus just tailpipe emissions.

I would say that LEGALLY you have to keep that horsepower converter on there! However it probably would be a good idea to make sure it works by removeing and replacing it with a straight pipe. This will tell you if it is plugged and let you know just how much power/mileage it is robbing. This normally takes about 400,000 miles to determine. :D ;)
Do a search on exhaust systems on this page and you'll find lots of great advice and facts.

I have also been on the Dvldg plan, one of the best things I did was skin that cat. The only areas in Arizona that presently do emission testing are Phoenix and Tucson, the rest of the state is wide open!

I had a back pressure test on mine last week and found that there was a back pressure of three on the converter. Really not clogged. But I removed it and the muffler. I installed a strait thru muffler. Wow what a difference.

Robert W Cooper - The folk's place is in Sun City - guess I'll call that Phoenix and plan accordingly.

MTTwister, yes that unfortunatly is part of Phoenix.......sorry for the bad news. You can check the Arizona MVD web page and it tells you what the requirements and testing procedures are.

More on that backpressure test! Did they (who?) drill into cat inlet tube? Was that 3 PSI? Was measurement done at idle? on dyno?

Didn't do a backpressure test on mine. Original CAT and exhaust and 120K on the truck. I "cleaned" the CAT out and picked up 1.5 MPG.
