View Full Version : SAE or Metric?
It may sound like a stupid question, but do bolts and nuts on 2500HDs uses SAE or Metric wrench/socket? Or both? I know that Chevy trucks are America built automaker but it seems that some bolts and nuts don't fit well with SAE wrench/socket.

Metric... Everything....
Yeah, ummm, no.
The suspension bolts seem to be SAE, unfortunately. Guess I'll need to buy some SAE wrenches and stuff.

StrangeEngine, which ones? All of the fasteners I've looked at or turned on the truck are Metric, and that's everything from the chassis to the engine, transmission, rearend, interior, etc...
The most commmon sizes I've seen are 7 (interior), 10 (chassis, interior, engine), 12 (engine), 15 (chassis, engine), 18 (suspension), and 22 (suspension). 22mm is almost interchangeable with 7/8". 22mm is only .009" larger than 7/8". There are a few 13mm (engine, rearend, transmission) and 14mm (engine) sizes, and one real oddball- the OEM drain plug @ 16mm. There are many more sizes on the truck, but these are the most common ones a normal person would see doing routine maintenance and accessorizing.

I have used 8 mm on the interior as well. Works on the battery too.
What size are the wheel lug nuts?

Come on...we all know that GMC uses lock washers and Chevy whatever's left on the floor...
Sorry couldn't resist :D

You are correct. I thought the rear spring shackle bolts were 5/8", but it turns out that they are 21mm.
My bad.

Ardmore, the lug nuts are 22mm.
StrangeEngine, I forgot to add 21mm to the list above. It too is a common size used on these trucks.
MadDuraMax, you're mistaken. GMC's use the floor sweepings and seconds... tongue.gif ;)
