View Full Version : Warranty issuue: K&N air filter
I talked to a GM mechanic today, he said that if you come in with a problem with your Duramax and you run a K&N air filter, it is possible to void your warranty. Just to let you know.

This subject has been beaten to death.
Although some dealers will deny claims of radio knobs falling off if you have an aftermarket bumper sticker, it's not lawful, nor inline with the warranty language.
A warranty claim can be denied if they determine (or suspect, in many cases) the issue was caused by an installed aftermarket, non-compliant component. Outside of that, you can install whatever you want to. Once you install a non-GM approved aftermarket device, you become your own warranty department in regards to whatever that device effects.
An example of this:
You install a K&N filter, and have MAF sensor issues. It is likely the dealer, if he complies with the bulletin, will check to see if you have a non-OEM filter installed. If he finds your K&N filter, and determines the filter caused the issue, he is supposed to deny the warranty claim. The reasoning for this is oil contamination of the MAF sensor.

FYI mass airflow sensors can be cleaned with electrical parts cleaner and I have used starting fluid (ether), just dont clean it in the duct... remove it and let it dry 100% before running it! this will cure most oil fouled mass air flow problems.
