I read the posts where new 4" etc exhaust systems are dropping EGT by 100-200 degrees.

It seems the general consensus of the boards to put the EGT probe in the PS exh manifold.

Since there is a turbo between the probe and the new exhaust system, how does this help EGT?

Is it because the turbo can get the exh gas out quicker?

Pretty kool when you answer your own question, eh ?

Weeeellll, "technically" the turbo is not getting the exhaust gas out quicker, but the exhaust gas is getting out of the turbo quicker! :D The trick is reduced backpressure, which increases flow through the turbo and allows more flow from the exhaust headers into the turbo. The backpressure produced by the stock oval muffler stuffs up and thereby increases the heat soaking of the entire system forward of the muffler, all the way to the exhaust valves in the head. :(

Idle, I'm just a Hick so cut me some "technical" slack ! lol ! What you said is what I meant though.....Just gotta read between the lines :D Kidding aside, very well written post..... ;)

Is the stock muffler design simply to make the truck quieter?

The back pressure is unnecessary in a turbo motor.

Weeelll, "Technically" the turbo is a pump. When you decrease discharge head you flow more with the same amount of inlet pressure. Later! Lone eagle :D

Does this mean that we should remove the muffler for lower EGT's ?

It means IF you remove the muffler you almost certainly will reduce EGTs.

Wakely, I replaced my factory muffler with a Magnafloe 4" straight-through muffler. AFP and some others have done this also. I saw immediate reductions in my EGTs across the board.

Idle, Where did you buy your muffler? Later! Lone Eagle

Eagle, I ordered it off the 'net, from Henschel & Sons in Connellsville, PA (www.henschelandsons.com). It was the Magnaflow stainless model 14771 for $149.42 I also bought two model 15441 3-1/2 X 4 stainless adapters @ $22.33 each. I cut out the factory oval muffler, fit up the adapters to the muffler with band clamps and tack welded it in between the hangers where the factory muffler had been. Then I unclamped and removed the three pieces and finished the welds and reinstalled it all.
