Got my Fuel Test Results from AV Lube. (Sent Monday, received Friday – excellent service!) A summary of the results for the Stanadyne FM100 30 micron pre-filter/lift-pump (http://community.webshots.com/album/77018086bLHHHC) , OEM Filter and JK Megafilter (http://community.webshots.com/album/67970835fahHeh) combination are as follows:

ISO Cleanliness Code 13/12/10 (Max . 20/19/15 - Target ->15/13/10) for />2/>5/>15/ microns
I think this is Good… :D :D (JK’s posted ISO numbers for his Mega test are 15/13/11)

Particle Counts:

>2 limit 10000
>5 limit 5000
>15 limit 320

>2 actual 76
>5 actual 25
>15 actual 8

Other results:
Cetane Index (D-976) 46.21 Acceptable (Min. 40)
Water (D-6304) 72 ppm Acceptable (Max 500ppm)
Water & Sediment (D-1796) 0.01& Acceptable (Max .05 % vol.)
ISO Cleanliness Code 13/12/10 Acceptable (Max . 20/19/15 - Target ->15/13/10)
API Gravity (D-287) 34.9 (Typically in the 30's)
Distillation (D-86)
IBP 340 F Acceptable (Min. 300 F)
5% 387 F
50% 505 F
90% 610 F Acceptable (540-640 F)
Endpoint 653 F
Return 98.2%

I also posted the full report (http://community.webshots.com/photo/83846161/83846702SzutOU) and some pictures (http://community.webshots.com/album/83846161wSIlBH) of how the sample was collected from the schrader valve. The sample was taken with 12kmi on the truck, 6kmi on the Mega, 3kmi on the Stanadyne prefilter and 2.5kmi on the OEM. Tank was half full. smile.gif

Bill,

What did this cost you to put togther?

Is the pre-filter really necessary?

If the lift pump fails, will the fuel still flow through?

Have you seen an increase in power/mileage?

Bill,
Great numbers, The lowest reported to date. Looks like your work has payed off well. :D

Bill,

I bet it feels good to have such great results. I wonder how much difference having that 3rd filter makes in the end results? take care and enjoy clean fuel!

Blaine,
Answers to your questions:

“What did this cost you to put togther?”
Well uh… ok… around $500. (Includes Megafilter, Liftpump, FM100 Filter, fittings, hose, clamps, steel fuel line tubing, needle valve, pressure switch, relay, wire loom, Vac/Pressure Gauge and a few other misc parts).

“Is the pre-filter really necessary?”
No. Tommy’s setup doesn’t have the pre-filter. However, my (and others) experience with the AC Delco Liftpump on the 6.5L Diesel said the pumps lasted about 60kmi. A few years back the consensus on the 6.5 forum was that a pre-filter would prolong it’s life.

Nick,
It doesn’t seem like 30um FM100 (third filter) should make much difference with the results other than making the OE filter last a little longer. However since it’s in the pressure regulator bypass loop it does re-filter the fuel (but only at 30um)

“If the lift pump fails, will the fuel still flow through?”
Yes, that’s the advantage of the AC Delco pump. When the pump failed on my 98 6.5 I didn’t discover it until I changed the fuel filter and tried to bleed the system by running the lift pump.

“Have you seen an increase in power/mileage?”
Well, I definitely notice a seat of the pants difference. The truck is more responsive and “snappy” feeling. It also seems to run smoother, quieter and seems to start quicker. Mileage is good but I installed the Megafilter at the same time that fuel was switching from winter blend. On trips going 65-70 MPH I consistently get 20-20.5 MPG. Mixed city/highway driving is 17-18mpg. I have never seen lower than 16 mpg.

Tommy/Nick,
Thanks for the feedback. I am pleased with how things turned out and it was a lot of fun too!
However, it was definitely a team effort. Special thanks to JK for designing a great filter… and to Tommy, Chris, and all those on this page who readily share their knowledge and experience.

Bill,

Thanks.

How much was the lift pump by itself?

Blaine,
I purchased the Lift pump from JK. He currently has them listed on his website (http://www.kennedydiesel.com) under "6.2L/6.5L Parts". smile.gif

Bill's fuel analysis results are 'the' best/cleanest fuel we have processed to date. Particles are less than half of even target cleanliness; an incredible accomplishment which is going to enable Bill's fuel system to live a *very* long life. Fuel system problems are going to be non-existent with this fuel filter system working optimimally. Superb numbers, work...

Way to go Bill! Since I have the same system as you, I'll assume I have the same cleanliness level for my fuel. :D

Hey, where are we going to put the 4th filter. tongue.gif

It's funny you guys joke about the fourth filter. I'm headed in the same direction as you folks now. Installed the mega last weekend, and have the Stanadyne FM100 with lift pump on the bench ready to go in. Just waiting a bit to see what/if air issues arise.

Anyway, I still have my Racor 660R 2 micron on the frame rail pre-OEM, and was thinking about leaving it on. Stanandyne 30um to Racor 10um to OEM?? to mega 2um....now that's clean fuel. I doubt I'll do it but it did cross my mind. :D

I would like to take a moment to remind everyone of just how far you all have come with respect to your fuel knowledge level. You are discussing cetane index, Karl Fischer's, ISO cleanliness levels as a normal course of discussion yet 99.9% of the fleet managers in the world that are writing out checks for fuel waay in excess of million dollars per month do not have the faintest idea of what you/we speak. And yet these parameters are affecting fleets with thousands of diesel engines to the tune of millions of dollars a year in premature fuel pump/injector failures.. The value, the work of this forum is incredible....
