I'd appreciate suggestions of where to install the Amsoil Bypass oil filter on my 03 Duramax?

Also any tips or cautions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I am going to install this same system myself in about a week. I have done some research (talked to my Amsoil rep. and looked at amsoil website, etc.) and the best place to mount it as far as I can see is inside on the frame rail, just below the drivers side door(it will be in the horizontal position). Or just below the drivers side seat, there is an open area there and the filters will be in a vertical position. Hope this helps!

Some have mounted them to the driver's floor pan. I originally mounted mine to the aluminum heat shield under the driver's floor. Found that there was too much flow vibration and noise in that location, even after I rubber-isolated and urethane foamed the shield. I then remounted it to a frame bracket that I bought from Greg Landuyt, our resident Amsoil Man (www.lubespecialist.com). The frame bracket is the best location - solid, vertical, fits nicely between the front drive shaft and driver's torsion bar. I did modify my bracket some to raise the filters a little higher and to center them between the drive shaft and torsion bar. I think Greg has changed the bracket since I bought mine for the centering. Pictures are in my PICS link below.

Greg's bracket does work great for mounting it to the frame rail. I modified it a little by drilling two more holes a little lower to make it sit a little higher. I have pictures of it below as well. I just pulled my bypass off a week ago, it's six months old. If anyone's interested in it, drop me a line.

I also mounted in the location of the sheild under the drivers seat, but chose to shape 1/8th" plate and scrap the flimsy Alm. sheild. It is solid, above the frame, and there are no noise issues.Cost was $0.00 and 15 minutes to bend, drill and trim the plate.

I also initially mounted to the sheet metal shield below the drivers feet. After a couple of months, this shield already started to crack. I replaced this shield with a piece of 1/8 inch steel, which is bent 90 Deg., and bolted to the inside frame. My hoses are only about 15 inches long.
Be sure to leave some slack in the hoses. Supposedly tight hoses will vibrate.
My BE 100 bypass and SDF20 full flow are both sitting above bottem of frame. The BE110 would hang below frame, so I don't use this one.

I am also using Greg's bracket and it works great. I have some pictures under my various pics link.

W/T I took my BMK 17 off for a few reasons. The biggest is AMS's extremely poor customer service. Every time I called there, I got someone with a bad attitude. The worst of it was when I ordered the Dual Bypass if the first place. I get the thing in the mail and all the box had in it was the mount and hose, the mount was all beat to crap too. I called the right away and told them about it, the guy was like "what do you want me to do about it?". After nearly an hour of playing their games, I got someone there to agree to send me a new one. They told me to call the next day and they'd let me know when it would be shipped and when I'd get it. I called the next day and asked when the new one would be shipped. The response I got was less than desirable, "What, you want us to send it out right away?". My answer was as anyone's should've been, yes. After playing the transfer game for a while, I was told that they would get it out the next day. It only took a month for me to get it. When I got the new kit much to my amazement, it was missing parts. I got the joy of playing games with AMS again and this time it only took about three weeks for me to get the parts. After all this I still put it on and ran it. When I made an order for some BE100s, I was connected with someone who obviously hates there job. That was the last straw, I began to look for something else. I pulled the dual bypass off a couple weeks ago and the new one will go on soon.
Take it Easy,

BlueOx03, Sorry to hear you had problems with Amsoil Cust. Serv., but in my experiance with them, this is not normal. Not to long ago, the seal on my Bypass system let go, (I over tightened it), and I called them to talk about it. Not only did they overnite two new seals to me, free of charge, a few days later I got a free Gallon of 15w-40 synthetic to replace the oil which I lost. And this incident was all MY FAULT. They owed me nothing. I have had nothing but good feedback and service from them.

I've had good luck with dealers like Greg and John Kennedy, although I've never bought AMS from them. I'm surprised you had such a good experience with AMS after all the crap I had to deal with. Sounds like we should've got each-others experiences.

When ever you have trouble with something of Amsoil's go back to the dealer you got it from. I deal with Amsoil daily and know all the right people so any problem I have normally gets corrected right away.

I've seen an AMSOIL bypass cut open, and it inspired me to go with a completely different system...

I guess I left out the fact that I dealt with AMS directly through their Preferred Customer program. Maybe you get better service when you bring them in a few grand a year.

I forgot all about the spring loaded masonite doughnuts...

tysmith,

You slamed the AMSOIL bypass pretty hard but didn't indicate why. Care to share?

I didn't think I slammed it...

But since you ask, when cut open, it revealed a filter 'media' that appeared to be 'masonite doughnuts' to quote the Ox. In fact, it was his bypass that was cut open. The doughnuts are stacked around the center pick-up tube, which had a cottony-gauzey sock over it as a 'post-masonite' filter. This gauze-like material had some fairly large - easily visible with the eye - pieces of something on it (possibly filter media). It just didn't look like something I wanted to put on my truck for that kind of money.

Obviously, AMSOIL is a large company with a strong product. I have not used any of their products, but I did cut open the bypass. It was simply from those observations that I concluded that it - the bypass - was not a product I would install or recommend.

I'm pretty much filter stupid and depend on others for an informed choice. From what I learned from non-AMSOIL assets, I went with the dual by-pass and feel perfectly safe. Greg is a stand-up guy and is always willing to help.

The 'masonite doughnuts' you refered to..., I can't get my minds eye to focus on that kind of media.

If it looks like a duck...etc. It works, I'm happy, and the GM mech said the insides were spotless (85k miles). This is the first I've heard negative stuff about the system.

By the way... What was the 'masonite doughnuts' made of?

uh, masonite?! ;) tongue.gif

Like I said, I'm sure it was tested, and works, with good results. Obviously many people have been running it for a long time with no problems that I've heard. If you've got something that works, by no means should you dink with it. I just saw what was in that can, and decided to go another route.

I suppose 'doughnut' isn't really the correct term. Perhaps 'disk' is better terminology. When you pull the whole deal out of the filter can, the disks are all stacked up on one another. The disks were about 3/16 to 1/4" thick - I forget how many.

Again, in a world of opinion, I was just expressing mine.

I hope this helps clear things up.

Ty

I noticed in your sig you have rockets. Perhaps you have the right idea - solid fuel. No filter issues there... :D

RATO (Rocket Assist TakeOff). Soon I'll upgrade to a JATO (Jet...). It's a short trip to MACH 1 but the fuel mileage stinks.
