View Full Version : REAR MAIN SEAL FAILURE
Truck has been in and out of dealer 5 times over past two weeks for oil leak. Leaking at rear of oil pan. Dealer now says problem is rear main seal. Truck has only 63,000 miles and has not been used hard. Seems premature to me.
Does anyone know of any others who have had rear main seal leak?

There is a TSB pertaining to rear main leak in cold weather...

I suppose that its not cold enough for this to take effect..

Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Leaks During Extreme Cold Weather Operation (-29
Well, dealer pulled tranny only to find rear main seal not leaking (I suspected that). Found turbo oil line seals leaking. Replaced them but still leaking. Finally replaced o-ring under turbo. Now vehicle has a vibration at 1300-1400 RPM. Any ideas?

Reading that TSB has made me go out and remove the extension I put on the breather tube. I had it hanging down where water/ice could build up in the winter, I hope it didn't happen last year. Now we know why those GM engineers made those tubes only as long as they did (does that mean they are smart or just lucky). I'll have to see if I can figure out another way of keeping that tube from blowing oil all over the bottom of the engine.
There is an air/oil separator for aircraft use that probably could be used on our engines. I'm guessing it is expensive, but you can check it out at www.m-20turbos.com. (http://www.m-20turbos.com.)
Flyboy -- there is an oil/air seperator. Downtube runs from that. Should not be getting a lot of oil out of tube, just a mist.
Well, my oil leaks are finally gone. Now only slight vibration at 1300-1400 RPM ?? Am afraid to bring it back to dealer. Took them a month to get the oil leaks taken care of.
