Here's the history!
Bought my '93 6.5TD in '96 w/about 76K miles. Didn't know jack about diesels then, sometimes I feel I know even less now.
About a year ago I noticed a "surging" or hesitating sensation when cruising at 50-60mph. At times it felt real similar to a gasoline engine "missing". I contacted a friend who happens to be a professional diesel mechanic. He asked me when I had last changed the fuel filter. "What filter?" Was my response. After he stopped laughing at me he removed it, and refused to let me temporarily put in it his parts cleaner. Claimed he didn't want to dirty his parts cleaner, yeah ha-ha! New filter installed, back to running great.
About 10k miles later "surging" returned. I replaced the filter right before a trip. No change, still "surging" and you can see it happening on my turbo boost gauge. I talk to another diesel specialist who suspects injection pump metering valve razz-a-ma-tazz something due to mileage (now 180K) and my not using diesel additive. (No one ever told me about additives either!) He recommends Stanadyne additive for about a tankful, if no improvement, rebuild the pump ($500). Since I was on the road I bought a case of the additive and figured I'd look into repairs here at home. No change in the surging but I was kinda getting used to it.
Now the weather has gotten very cold, plugging in nightly again. Typical winter routine. Last couple of days I've driven quite abit and NO SURGING AT ALL. Is it the cold weather or what? Could it be the 6 tankfuls with additive doing something? I am soooo confused! Maybe I should just scrap it and keep my '03 Duramax. Hmmmmmm, any thoughts?
