Just returned from a trip to Idaho for a family reunion, and the National Old Time Fiddler's Contest. We took two 5th wheels pulled by a Dodge and my Duramax. Thought some of you might be interested in the performance results.

Duramax: 2002 Chev. 2500HD CC 4x4 Allison
5th Wheel: 32 ft Holiday Rambler with Slide out
11,840 lbs. GVW total:19,440

Dodge: 1999 3500 Quad Cab Cummins 4x4 Auto W/4.10 gears.
5th Wheel: 21.5 ft. Prowler 6,500 lbs.

Both pickups ran flawlessly and performed almost equally. If the Chev was in the lead on a hill the Dodge would fal behind some and if the Dodge was in the lead the Chev had to slow down. On some hills I could have passed the Dodge, and on some I couldn't.

On Soldier's Summit between Price and Salt Lake City, Ut. the Chev topped the pass at63MPH and the Dodge was about 58MPH. Elevation7,800+

On the grade between Salt Lake City and Park City, Ut. the Chev topped at 58MPH and the Dodge was 51MPH. Big Rigs were running about 30.

Both Pickups averaged 10.5 mpg at 60 to 70 mph, with some interstate at 75, and lots of grades. Unloaded sightseeing the Chev mileage was 18 and the Dodge was 14.

Both pickups would have almost equal in performance if the Chev hadn't been about 5,000 lbs heavier.

Regards.

I think if the CTD had another 5000 lbs. on it the differences would have been much greater. The Dodge had 4.10's, I would like to drive a D-Max with 4.10's. I know the huge difference in a 6.5 (3.73 vs 4.10) so a D/A would be really strong.

It is nice to travel with others to see how your combination stacks up performance wise, not just running past someone on the highway but actually talking about different things on the road and how they affected the trucks.

Happy Camping,

John
