I just read an article which detailed how Fiat and GM developed "multijet" technology for increased power, mileage and decreased emissions.
Basically, we're currently getting a pilot injection pulse and then the main injection pulse. This gives us decreased combustion noise. What GM/Fiat have done is split the main injector pulse into 2 separate pulses, in effect widening pulse width while injecting less fuel.

Have any of the programmers tried this approach? It sounds like it would work on any common rail injection system. Call me greedy, but yes, I'd like an extra 200hp and 24mpg. ;)
