I'm going to take my 02 on it's first long trip next week and was wondering what things I should be doing to the truck in preparation, if anything?
I've got about 8500 miles on her right now and have done nothing but change the oil/filter 3 times. I'll be towing a small RV that weighs about 4K.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Shane

Here is a small list

leave your guns at home (customs)
The speeds are posted in kilometers 100=62mph 60=36mph 50=30mph 40=20mph
diesel in the Toronto area is 59.9cents per liter 1 liter= 1 usa quart (aprox.)
exchange your money at the bank only (65cents USA for $1.00 Canadian
only carry $20.00 bills nothing larger ( to many counterfits in larger bills.
If you see Canadian Tire Money (same as pep boys) buy a bucket and shovel
You can use your seniors card in the Provincial camp sites (that's if your old enough?????)
For the bugs buy any insect spray or liquid repelant with DEET in it (drug store or Canadian Tire Store)

Make sure you bring a spare fuel filter ($110.00 canadian) or bring some spare cases and sell them (I allready bought mine in the states)

Enjoy and have a good time.

Shane, if Ontario has bugs come to B.C. NO BUGS! We also have a more temperate climate. Not too hot and very little humidity ;)
As a bonus we have the Mountains, the Gulf Islands, and the Pacific Ocean all in the same place! Can't beat it! smile.gif

I just came back Sat 1June. Went to North Western Que. via Thousand Islands Bridge, 401-416-417-17 to North Bay then into Que. In addition to the Deet, I took a fairly new product labeled Permanone, packaged by OFF people, but I've seen other companies in the US offer it. You can buy it in the US at Walmart and Kmart. I did not see it in Canada. You are supposed to only spray it on your clothes, but it works on skin for short periods of time. The reason it says to only spray on clothes is that sweat neutralizes it. It will not only repel them, but kill the little buggers. Between the two, I never got bit.
Also, Radar detectors are illegal, but I went through 7 speed traps from North Bay to Pembroke on Sat. That's more cops than I've seen in 10 years up there. Lucky thing I had one hidden above my visor.
Besides changing money in banks, you can also use credit cards for good rates and there are ATM's everywhere.

2002 GMC Dmax/Alli EC LB RED ran like a charm. Just wish Canada would fix 17. It sure is getting rough. Maybe that's what all those radar traps were for--getting money to repave it (riiight!!)

Have a nice trip,
Joe

You must come to Western Canada. Alberta and BC are spectacular. The mountains and lakes are awesome and it is so clean. In Alberta there is no Provincial Sales Tax. Alberta is one of the best places in North America and has one of the lowest tax rates. Canada is an awesome place, glad to see you are comming to check us out. Radar detectors are legal in Western Canada. (BC & Alberta)

I'm putting this as a second post so you wont miss it.
save all of your bills while in Canada, when you cross into Canada or return to the USA you can obtain a form from Canadian Customs for a rebate of 8% GST (goods and service tax) this applies to all visitor from out of country.
I hope you realize it costs me double to visit the USA and you 1/2 to come to Canada OH WELL!!!!!!!!!

again have a great holiday.

DURAMAN :
You`re really going to enjoy Canada. I`ve been to Can. many times, all the way thru to Alaska 3 times and I think the Western Provs. are by far the most enjoyable. You can use your credit card almost everywhere and when you are billed you are charged the U.S. equivalent at the time of the transaction. Yes and be prepared to pay higher fuel prices. Have Fun.

Shane/Duraman;
Your handle does not mention where you live in the lower 48. Where are you planning on going when you drag the rv up? Those of us that live in that particular region can give you some pointers. Do you want to drive coast to coast? Please advise. :D

I'm not traveling from a far. I'm only one state below you fellas (Southern WI). I'll be headed to Cedar Lake Camp in western Ontario for a week of fishing, gambling, and gentleman's clubbing. This will be the second trip I've made to Canada and the last time I was up there I think I slept a total of 8 hours all week. Fished dusk til dawn, went out to the clubs, ended the night at the casinos and drove back to camp in time to wash the women off (the fish don't like the perfume) and hop back in the boat. Anyone know of any hot fishing spots in that neck of the woods? On water or land. smile.gif

Don't forget to pick up a bottle of Gentleman Jack at duty-free on the way back.
Think 1.75 liter was about $22. About half of price here.
Ask people at checkout how many bottles you can get w/o paying tax. There more leniant some days.

Did you want advice about the truck?
Check your fluids like normal and relax.

I haven't been for years but always had a great time (used to go for pistol competetition at Royal Roads Military College). I'm really posting IRT the Permanone comment. The reason it is to be used only on cloting is that it has a very mild nerve agent effect on humans that's why it will kill insects. It will last for up to two weeks on clothing. DO NOT spray it on your skin. Excess application on skin can cause a slight numbing of the lips etc. I used it with great success in the Marine Corps for years and as a hunter before that but please use it as directed. Have fun.
