Last week my '96 5-speed lost motive abilities in all gears and ranges, with a resulting faint grinding noise when you tried to move it... I assumed that the range fork in the T-case had given up, as I've read that that's common in high mileage rigs, and mine has 208k on it.
Turns out the output of the trans and the input of the t-case both have only about half the tooth profile they orig. came with!! I stripped the splines off, basically. Looks like this has been a long time coming... I couldn't find any pieces of tooth anywhere, only red thick gook where they used to be!
This might explain why it drove like there was excessive slop in the drivetrain, even though the rear axle was tight!
