View Full Version : What is up with diesel prices?

Jimamatic

I was driving home from work today and saw that diesel is up to an insane 2.39 per gal. Premium gas is a mere 2.08 per gal. Thats right, 92 octane. Does anybody know of or heard a legitimate reason for why we diesel owners are being ripped off at the pump.  I remenber (Before I bought my truck), when diesel prices where 10 cents below 87 octane. Now they are 53 cents higher. I've said the serenity prayer all I can and now it's up to you guys on The DP. Some one please help....

Well I heard that the reason diesel isup in price is because the demand for home heating oil is high during winter months. Just be glad you are not living in Canada, we are paying 78 cents per liter which converts to about $ 3.50 gal.
Does that make you feel better?

Later.....DD :D :D

1.79 here in Katy Tx.

Good grief. I believe the most I payed was 1.99. I don't think I went over 2.00 a gallon. I drive 55 miles a day. Any more than 2 bucks a gallon and I will have to buy a cheap toyota echo or the likes of it and drive the truck on the weekend.

I remember when I complained about .90 cents a gallon.

Saw $2.199 here today (Exxon). Flying J about $0.10 higher! Seems like prices have been floating between what they're charging for mid-grade (89) and premium gas. It wasn't that long ago that diesel was higher than premium! I thought it was supposed to be cheaper to refine diesel than gasoline. I also heard that prices would probably be going higher near term :(

If I had to fill up there, those phone pole adds would come in handy.

I'd have to sell my home, and buy that motor home to live in, then have to take that job to pay the balance. Too funny!

Prices around here are crazy, for here. #2 is $2.29/gal. It got down to $2.09 a couple months ago, and that was still bad.

That pic is a sick joke. True or not!

It seems like that's what you get for choosing a vehicle with an engine that is more efficient and better for the environment. The oil barons will have you grabbing your ankles one way or another. I am continuosly baffled by the fact that the answer to all the world's fuel problems is largely overlooked. I should say answers, since high quality biodiesel can come from a variety of air cleansing, soil fortifying plants. I find it difficult to believe that all of our advanced tax dollar funded government research programs have not produced low cost plant based alteratives. George Washington Carver had this figured out nearly a century ago. I apologize for rambling, but I know that I am not the only person sick of making the oil barons and opec nations richer every time I stop at the pump. Not only that, but the production and use of biofuels do the environment a twofold benefit. Besides, everyone here knows diesel rules! Petroleum fuels need to go the way of the dinosuar. I love my diesel truck, but the $ I shell out at the pump makes me mad. I would feel much better supporting the American farmer and economy as well as helping to offset pollution.

Normal freeway prices between Portland, Or and Seattle was in excess of 1.50 yesterday with a High of 1.67. I filled up in Vancouver today at 1.39 and that is the lowest I have seen in over 1 week.
Diesel is generally 30 to 40 cents above premium in this area. It really hurts to fill up with 23 gals at close to $60. Where I filled up they have special truck diesel pumps that are .03 below the car diesel pumps.

Seattle, WA nothing under $2.50. Probably cheaper to buy gas in Montana and have it sent here.
No one has addressed the gas/diesel price problem? To say that oil demand is up in the winter contradicts the statement that "the more people who buy and use diesel, the cheaper the prices will be". Whoever said this is more full of **** than a cowfield. 15yrs ago when I used to fill up our tractor it was less than $1 a gallon, and gas was atleast .40c more.

I believe the cost problems are created by your local refinaries (cost of oil, transporting, and pump mark up are constant or minimal) I dont care if gas is $10 a freakin gallon, just dont dare charge me more than premium gas you **** ******* ****** *******!

If I am correct, diesel is a by-product during the refining of oil into usable gasoline. Thus, to justify the high cost of diesel, there must be a high demand and somewhat of a shortage? Right? Does anyone have any stats to support this? There are a hell-of-alot of big machines running on diesel, does the US use more diesel than gas?

Diesel today in my area is up to 2.71 per gal.
If the high price is due to the war effort, then why does'nt the government just come out and say it? I will gladly pay it and then some. I just don't think that is the case. If it were, then you would see this insane pricing across the country. In the North West, diesel is about 65 cents higher than 87 octane. Where else is it priced that much higher than than gas? I think selected markets are singled out and jacked up for profit. Keep these markets small enough and spread out and you'll keep the media off your back. Could you just imagine what the media would do if the American public were paying 2.71 per gal of 87 octane gas? Try to wrap your mind around that one.....

I wonder what would happen if the average person actually realized that the vast open acreage of this great nation could produce all the biofuels we could ever use, and that their hard earned dollar could benefit their own economy instead of contributing to the already highest per-capita income of some third world sand heap, not to mention the unspeakably avaricious oil companies. Imagine then, what would happen if said working class came to the realization that it was their own elected officials that sold them out. Americans selling each other out in the name of the almighty dollar. Yeah, I know, welcome to the real world. Give me convenience or give me death.

Bottom line, liberals in Congress, that we the people voted in, have put spotted owls and toads ahead of providing a sound energy policy and security for our country. Greetings from western Washington, had not paid much attention to diesel prices until I was reviewing some statements and noticed that the price was going up .05 at a time so I started tracking at the local mini mart (Exxon) and the percentage is what kills me, 2-8-05 = $2.15, 2-28-05 = $2.65. If I have done the math correctly that is a 23.3% increase in 20 days

Opposite of progress: Congress! What is the percentage of the population that actually vote? IIRC it is pretty low. I imagine an America whose politics aren't sold to the corporations with the highest profit margins...An America where fields are green and biodiesel is cheap... Where "Homeland Security" means well-armed responsible American patriots, not charlatans that take Hawaiian vacations on the taxpayer's back...No one will ever convince me that $2+ a gallon for diesel is cheap. Or that $11/hr is good money considering 30 years ago my dad made $6.50/hr and managed a mortgage etc. All the clean renewable energy we can use is at our fingertips, and in many forms, yet corporate industry will have you believe that these technologies are too expensive, need a very long development period to be useful, etc. The worst part is how many people believe that fossil fuels and nuclear power are ok. There is no reason why we can't enjoy our diesel power and keep the tree huggers happy at the same time. What will it take to motivate the largely non-voting public to action?

Going by the price on the Flying J website, it says that the price in London Ontario is 74.9 per litre. That converts to $2.84 a US gallon (.749 x 3.785) or $3.41 per Imperial gallon (.749 x 4.546). I buy from a cardlock facility and the price there floats up or down a few cents from the Flying J price depending on what the gas is selling for that day. Gas here is about $3.00 a US gallon on average with highs in excess of $3.20. It is nothing for the price to jump from $2.90 one day to $3.20 the next morning. It usually happens on a Tuesday or Wednesday so most of us fill up on Mondays. I'm going to have to partially disagree here. The price of oil right now has increased nearly 20% because the dollar has tanked and it's not because of anything the liberals did - running a deficit causes the dollar to lose value. That combined with a seasonal demand for heating oil has pushed diesel through the roof. There is no supply problem with petroleum and gas. Those inventories are up nearly 10% above last years levels. If you want to point a finger, blame the republican congress and its mismanagement / overspending of our tax dollars

Demand for winter heating oil has been much lower in the North West this year because of a
very mild winter. So I just don't buy the low supply theory. Washington State has nearly the most highest priced diesel in the country second only to Hawaii. Todays price, 2.76 per gal. We are now down to a one car family. My truck is sitting in the garage where it will stay until this insanity stops.

As far as politics go, Whether you're on the left or the right big oil has all politicians in their pockets. They have way too much power and there is not a darn thing we can do about it. Freedom is great as long as you can afford it....

2dogs, scary stuff man! I thought America was supposed to be the star of democracy in the modern world. I have a hard time accepting that Americans have died to protect the freedoms that we enjoy, and that so few understand that freedom encompasses so much more than comedic celebrities being able to poke fun at governmental figureheads. Freedom also includes not having to be slaves to the 40 hour work week in order to help some corporate stroke make his/her yacht payment, just so you can keep a roof over your head and food in the fridge. I hate to sound like a hippie, but imagine if local agricultural co-ops supplied your area with bio-fuel instead of continually feeding the oil greed machine. Imagine if the taxes taken out of our paychecks actually paid for something useful intead of sending satellites to Mars or testing flow rates of ketchup(catsup?)or giving tanks, planes, and money to Israel to further inflame unrest in the middle east when somewhere an American family is eating from a garbage can. I have a very tough time dealing with politicians arbitrarily voting themselves pay increases when the American Revolution was fought over a few cents of tax. I don't care if the following statement is politically correct. America is the best nation on earth. People have given their lives for America. America was based on democracy. As idealistic as it sounds, we the people can not allow big corporations to make us slaves in the name of profit. If we do we are taking a big greasy dump on the sacrifices of people that fought and died to protect the American way. Imagine getting the butt-horny gorilla of big oil off of the common man's back. One small step, one giant leap.....

Diesel comes off the tower just above Gas Oil. It is then blended with spec and off spec diesel and stored in tanks to be later shipped or trucked off to all parts of the world. Gasoline comes from the bottoms (waste) of the tower and has to be refined even more.

I do work for a refinery and wonder everyday why I pay (just like everyone else) .20 to .30 more a gallon for my diesel then gasoline.

It is not cheep by any means! But it is cheeper to make!

I have checked out the fuel prices, and $2.15 seems to be the going rate here. I also noticed that the price for premium is also $2.15 a gallon. That is not the case in Oregon. I won't be home untill the end of this week. I figure it will be around $3.00 a galllon by then. I guess the old 460 is going to be running again.

Economics 101-Reasons Diesel fuel is getting expensive, and will probably go up even more!

Supply & Demand Constraints.
Energy Content Pricing model.
Removal of Sulfur from the diesel fuel.

Supply & Demand constraints-Diesel fraction of a barrel of crude oil would be about 10%. With improvements in process stage designs, and additional catalytic cracker layers, refiners can now get upwards of 80% of a distillation run to be in the gasoline fraction. Normal diesel supply fraction is now less than 6%. (Bottom line, available stream of diesel is shrinking!)

Since supply of fuel is shrinking, (see above) the refiners are starting to consider energy content pricing model for diesel. There are two reasons that diesel engines get better mileage then their gasoline cousins. (1) the engine operates at higher combustion temperatures, and is therefore more efficient in its utilization of heat energy (refer to Sterling energy efficiency and Karnot heat cycle) (2) Diesel fuel, because it is less refined, contains 20% more energy content than the same volume of gasoline. So, if a gallon of diesel contains 20% more energy than gasoline, the energy content pricing model suggests diesel should be priced at least 20% more than gasoline! (You can kiss diesel costing less than gasoline goodbye forever!)

Up until 2001, diesel engines were virtually not under EPA environmental regulation. This is 2005. Notice your LLY duramax has a massive catalytic converter. In Europe they already have particulate converters that trap those particulates and burn them off the catalyst every 600 miles or so. But, by 2007 the sulfur content of diesel fuel has to be reduced by 90% from its current content. Sulfur, by its chemical nature and bonding structure, is exceedingly difficult (read costs a lot) to remove during the refining process. Since refiners have no choice but to comply with the EPA requirement, where do you think they are going to recover their up front costs?

By 2009, if you are driving your Duramax/Allison combination, it is because you need the torque and durability of a diesel engine. When cost per mile to operate is tallied against the same "horsepower" gasoline engine, the diesel engine owner will be paying more! But what is always true, "you get what you pay for"!

I think Bambad7 finally broke through the haze and fiqured it all out. My 2 cents worth is while its been a mild winter in some of the country - the North East (where a lot of us live and heat our homes with what is essentially diesel) has been very cold. $2/gal heating oil is really puttin on the hurt up here. $2.39/gal diesel (Connecticut) is a PIA but heating oil prices are off the wall! Something's got to give or we're all going down with the ship!

Not to give our congress a pass but I thought we bought oil in dollars and not other currencies. If thats so then the dollar tanking can't be part of the reason. Also, what happend to all the Iraqi oil that that our VP said would be flowing to pay for this war? We haven't seen much of the oil and we certainly haven't seen any of the $$.

Anybody ever check out how oil company profits are doing lately - they're through the roof!

Thats it. I'm done.

....Also, what happend to all the Iraqi oil that that our VP said would be flowing to pay for this war? We haven't seen much of the oil and we certainly haven't seen any of the $$....
That won't help. The oil that would be aquired (by the expense of our tax dollars, one way or another), would only be sold back to us, at whatever the current world market price is. Either way, we pay double for the oil, maybe more. Same thing happens when they release oil from the federal reserves. We paid for it when we paid our taxes, and we'll pay for it again at the pump. If it were anyone but the government, the government would be bringing charges for antitrust, racketeering, etc. for such behavior.

I vote, so I have a right to gripe, but I won't lay blame on any one party. It's pointless, and does nothing to remedy the problem.

BTW:
Fuel prices still rising in the Ag belt of CA. All fuels (propane, kerosene, Diesel, natural gas, etc.) are more than double what they should be. Just wait 'til that rubber band snaps back. Produce will cost more to grow, process, and ship. Get ready. You gotta' eat, and the REALLY big hit is yet to come!
