I was wondering what everyones engine hours vs miles driven were. My 03 has 45,500 miles with 1414 hours. There were a few days that it idled alot.

Just to compare, the 03 Ford crown vic that I drive for work has 51,000 miles and 4160 engine hours. Its driven VERY hard and idles all shift(to run computers, lights ect)

I was told once that ideling a engine for 1 hour is about like driving on the highway for 30 miles?

I recently asked the same question. Here are some answers from other Duramax owners.

That Crown Vic must be fueled with tax dollars... smile.gif

Average of one hour idling is 40 mph. I have a little of 47K on my 04.5 and have just about 1100 hours on it.

Hey David, during the Katrina evacuation, it took my daughter 11 hours to go the 80 miles to our house, most of it ideling with foot on the brake. Its an automatic Honda 4 cyl. I filled the tank the next day and it took just over 6 gallons. The trip average speed is just over 7mph. Just guessing that if the little fuel mizer 4 used 1/2 gallon an hour that a v8 would probable use around 1 gallon an hour. I know a guy that had a powerstroke that spent 26 hours in the same condition and he didn't run out of fuel so your guess is probably pretty close. My average speed has come way down since the fuel prices went way up.
