Up here where it gets real cold, I just us the grille portion on my 2003. It seems to work. I tried both one season and the engine didn't get any warmer.
Don't forget the block heater.

That reminds me.... I need to get the cover out, and get it on. smile.gif This will be the 5th winter for our 2001 GMC. Still has the original batteries and has always started great during the prior winters, but I do plug it in if it gets below 0 F.
