03 Duramax Oil Filter info

Just a note for the 03 owners. I learned during my last trip to the dealer here in Portland, OR that the GM parts system lists ONLY the black Izuzu oil filter P/N 97214983 for use on the 03 Duramax.

The parts system lists both the Izuzu filter and the AC/Delco PF2232, P/N 88917036 for use on the 01 and 02 Duramax engines.

The good news is that the Izuzu filter is a couple of bucks cheaper.

Any of you engine experts got any info on this difference? Does this info tie into the lower oil pressures that have been noted on previous TDP discussions. I wonder if the Baldwin filter and other aftermarket filter manufacturers have any differences in their filters? smile.gif :eek:

Bluetank, Interesting info. I just did my first oil change, 3250 miles, using Amsoil 15w40 and a SDF 52 filter. Based on other posts, I was expecting to see a relative drop in oil pressure. Surprise!! Oil pressure is up approx 5 psi both cold and hot. The SDF 52 filter had fewer holes in it than the OEM filter, but they were bigger.

I'm hoping that there hasn't been a change in GM specs that I missed somehow.

Anyone else seen an increase in oil pressure after filter change?

I was BSing with a local oil dude while waiting for an inspection on the wife's minivan to be completed. I had him look up the filter for my 03 DMax and he was just as surprised as you were to learn that they were different from previous years.

According to him the 03 filter has a bypass valve built into it that the previous filter did not have. Maybe GM is trying to reduce the high startup oil pressures many have been seeing.

The Amsoil doesn't have a bypass on it, so that would explain the higher pressure, assuming you were on the gorilla applied original. I put the Amsoil dual remote bypass on and it dropped my pressure by 7 psi. Been thinking about putting on a different oil pressure gauge as it maxes out at 75ish where it used to be pegged at 80 or more. Maybe the needle moved, but when it's cold, I don't think it's getting that low a pressure.

Just checked the Baldwin B1441 specs at www.baldwinfilter.com/catalog.html.

The B1441 has a 14psi bypass valve and the description says it is equivalent to a GMC 97214983 and Isuzu 8-97214-983-1.

Check the first link in my sig for pics of cut open filters - including the OEM Black Champion and the AC PF2232 oil filters.

Unless there was a recent change, the Champion and the AC oil filters are the same - both have an internal bypass valve.

I understand that Baldwin makes the Amsoil oil filter for the Dmax. Although I've not examined the Amsoil offering - it should have an internal oil bypass valve - otherwise it should NOT be on your engine.

I was just looking at the '03 Duramax Diesel Supplement that came with my GMC D/A, and it lists the PF2232 as the proper filter.

picked up a wix filter today and was wondering if I got the right filter does anybody know if the napa part #7202 is correct for the 2003?

The Wix 7202 is on my truck now and I see the exact same oil pressures that the OEM filter produced.

BTW. Boy that OEM filter sure was tight... Almost bent my filter wrench. The guy that put it on must have been on PCP, and the drain plug was tight as heck as well.

I've used the Wix/Napa 7202 on my last two oil changes. Also with this filter I lost the occasional lag in oil pressure build up on startup. I think I paid about $7 or $8 a piece for them. Well worth it I think and mine are made about 50 miles East of here in Gastonia, NC.
