cam vs ip timing

Is it possible to throw off the cam timing while changing out the timing chain? My '87 6.2 seems to have a lot of valve train noise. After I replaced the timing chain, the local diesel shop could not get it to run good at the specified 8 degrees BTDC. It is currently set with the pump mark approx 1/16 toward the pass side. Starts great, lots of pickup, good gas mileage. The shop said maybe I am off one tooth?

To answer your question, it's definitely possible to set the cam timing incorrectly and be off by a tooth or two. I rechecked my timing about 10 times by rotating the crankshaft and seeing that the dots lined up before finally buttoning up cover.

What do you see as good fuel consumption?

I am consistantly getting between 21-23 mpg. Low quality fuel and short trips will yield 19mpg, a real improvement over 12-14mpg with the stock Land Cruiser 4.2 petrol engine. They are great gas engines though.

Before I replaced my TH400 with a TH700R4, I was consistently seeing 11-13 mpg. After the swap the mileage went up to 14-16mpg. After replacing the timing chain with gears, the mileage has jumped to 18-21mpg. I have 4.56 diffs and 33" tires, the weighbridge measured my truck at 5100lbs and I'm running Kalifornia #2 diesel.
