View Full Version : Vacuum pump on the 6600

Has anyone seen or have a picture of the vacuum pump on a duramax. My serpentine belt diagram has a gost image of one on the passenger side of the engine. Is it a factory option. What would it be used for? (besides creating vaccum tongue.gif )

I am trying to retro fit a compressor there but would like to see what is supposed to fit.

The fact you are looking to fill the place where the vacuum pump says you don't have one (?)

I've one on mine altho I know not what its for, I assume its for CA emissions/EGR etc. Sorry ~ odoh

My service guy up here in Canada had no idea what I was talking about (big surprise) so CA emmisions sounds about right.

Yeah, I know. I just recalled that when shopping for a serpentine belt, there was a different one for CA trucks ~ so I'd say its a good guess ~ odoh

My CA '01 does not have a vacuum pump.

The G80 locker is mechanical. The front end is electric.

Would that vacuum pump work to boost vacuum brakes on trailers?? I sure hope so. I have the vacuum boost brakes on one of my trailers, but I did not think the Chevy had the needed vacuum pump. Anyone know? :confused:

I'm just guessing but I think it might be for the power brake booster. I'm still waiting on my 2003 CC D/A so I can't look and see. Follow the vacuum hose from the brake booster and see where it goes. Gotta be a vacuum source somewhere. The ghost accessory may be the dual alternator option as well.

Power brakes on the HD's is hydroboost. The booster uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump. GM (and others) diesels have had this from day one. I've seen the diagram with the ghost vacuum pump. It's in a different place than the aux. alternator.

One thing the vacuum pump is for is to operate the cruise control. That's all I can think of at the moment, can't figure out why there could be a need for an aux. unit?

All 2001's have no vacuum pump. 2002 CA models have one. All 2003 models are supposed to have one, as I have heard. The only difference between these models is smog stuff. Therefore, it must be for the smog equipment. This is my deduction, not fact.

The cruise control is electronic and internal.

No vacuum pump? How do the dampers operate in your hvac system?

How would a vacuum pump be used in your emmissions system? Normally, you pump air to the emmissions system to aid in more complete combustion. Not draw air away.

Confused.

Amianthus, the HVAC system is all electronic. All damper/door movements are done with small servo motors.

I'm thinking the pump in question is a pressure pump, not a vacuum pump...

It's my understanding that the vacuum pump is required for the EGR system on Kalifornya starting in 02.
