Look at the sticker in the glove box. One of the codes will be either LB7 or LLY. Also the 8th ( as I recall ) digit of the VIN # is a 1 on the LB7's and a 2 on the LLY's.
darn........... My 2004 is the earlier Dmax (Not a LL4). I should of done some more homework before I purchasd it. Oh well, so far I absolutely love the truck!
Thanks for the info!

Don't be too concerned. The LB7 is now a mature engine, and both the aftermarket and the GM dealer techs have had nearly 3-1/2 model years to learn how to make them perform. It'll be a while before the LLY reaches the same level.

Friend bought a new Chev over the phone. I told him to make sure he got the LLY. Salesman said it did. Brought to my house for show and tell. Popped the hood. Guess what? NO LLY! I told him to call dealer and raise hell! Said they probably wouldn't do anything anyway. I would have camped out at that dealer until I got my LLY or a big check.
Most salesman won't know what an LB7 is, nevermind an LLY . I knew more than my dealer did...
research pays!

I haven't been on the web for quite some time so I have to ask a dumb question. What is a lb7 and a lly?

The LLY is the Duramax engine redesign for 2004.5 and later. More power (3500 and lower models) and accomodations for maintenance (external injectors), as well as coast to coast EGR/Cat addition.
LB7 is the previous model, 2001 through early 2004.

Thanks for the explanation. I am not sure I would want the cat, but increased power would be ok. I have been thing of installing a new juice with the attitude module. Could help when pulling the RV.
