The rear axle is vented via a rubber tube with a plastic pop up end. The problem is that a small amount of oil comes out and drips on the floor. Is this normal? should it be dripping/seeping out?

No. It should not be dripping oil. Check the line to make sure it has no "sags" in it. It should have a continuous incline all the way to the end. If it has any sags or dips, oil vapor and dropplets will accumulate in the low spots, and the normal expansion will force it to the end and make a drip.
Well put Dmax Maverick
Same thing happened to me after I shackled the rear, streightened the line and all is well, thought the diff was building pressure.
